Our friend Edo Cohen stopped by the office this week from ActBold.com and we realized there's a lot of mistakes that businesses make on their websites.

Your website is your storefront to the world. Make sure you have these elements figured out to put your best foot forward.

5 Common Website Mistakes Companies Make

  1. Poor messaging
  2. Messaging is the easiest thing to change that will provide the most immediate impact. AB Testing can help you better understand what messaging will work. Try a service like Optimizely. Include your value proposition above the fold so people can learn more.

  3. Call to action below the fold
  4. Most people don’t scroll down far enough to see your "buy now" button. Keep it as high on the page as possible. Use BaseCamp as a good example of this.

  5. Confusing navigation
  6. Are you trying to do too much? Edo walked me through a good site (Basecamp.com) and they we examined MediaLeaders to see if we could improve.

  7. No clearly defined goal
  8. Need to know what success looks like before you launch a site. Your website is your storefront to the world. Make sure you have these elements figured out to put your best foot forward. Most companies don't define success before they get started on their site. Others let their site grow and they forget to keep pleasing their primary customer.

  9. Dead objects
  10. Are key objects clickable? For this example we looked at Equinox. They had a few images on their front page that weren't clickable for visitors. Watch as Edo explains how we should make everything trackable.
