Our friend Edo Cohen stopped by the office this week from ActBold.com and we realized there's a lot of mistakes that businesses make on their websites.
Your website is your storefront to the world. Make sure you have these elements figured out to put your best foot forward.
5 Common Website Mistakes Companies Make
- Poor messaging
- Call to action below the fold
- Confusing navigation
- No clearly defined goal
- Dead objects
Messaging is the easiest thing to change that will provide the most immediate impact. AB Testing can help you better understand what messaging will work. Try a service like Optimizely. Include your value proposition above the fold so people can learn more.
Most people don’t scroll down far enough to see your "buy now" button. Keep it as high on the page as possible. Use BaseCamp as a good example of this.
Are you trying to do too much? Edo walked me through a good site (Basecamp.com) and they we examined MediaLeaders to see if we could improve.
Need to know what success looks like before you launch a site. Most companies don't define success before they get started on their site. Others let their site grow and they forget to keep pleasing their primary customer.
Are key objects clickable? For this example we looked at Equinox. They had a few images on their front page that weren't clickable for visitors. Watch as Edo explains how we should make everything trackable.
